Important Spring Pool Maintenance Reminder
March 31/2025
As we head into spring, pool owners should be especially mindful of how snowmelt and rainfall can impact water levels and groundwater pressure. Whether you have a fiberglass, vinyl-lined, or concrete pool, it’s important to take a few preventative steps to protect your pool before the season gets underway.
Fiberglass Pools and Sump Wells: Watch Closely
If you own a fiberglass pool or any pool equipped with a sump well, now is the time to stay alert. Check your sump well regularly—if there’s water in it, it should be pumped out immediately. Why it matters: Water in the sump well can create enough upward pressure to push the pool out of the ground—often referred to as “floating.” This can lead to major structural damage. Keeping the sump well as dry as possible is essential to avoid this costly issue.
Managing Water on Safety Covers
Spring weather can bring heavy rainfall on top of melting snow, creating large volumes of water on safety covers. If water builds up near the edge of your pool or cover, you’ll want to start pumping it out—but do so slowly and cautiously.Best practice: Only pump out 1–2 inches at a time. Sudden water removal can lead to uneven pressure between the inside and outside of your pool. This imbalance might cause the liner to float or even damage the pool structure. The same rule applies to pools with water bag covers or snap-in covers.
Fiberglass Pools Need Extra Care
Ground saturation in the spring can significantly raise groundwater levels. For fiberglass pools, this poses an extra risk. Always ensure the water level inside your pool remains high—even if you’re trying to remove excess rainwater.Reminder: Never drain a fiberglass pool without checking your sump well and reviewing your manufacturer’s warranty guidelines. Lowering the water too much can make the pool vulnerable to floating.
Concrete or Tiled Pools: Monitor Levels Carefully
For concrete or tiled pools, it’s equally important to maintain proper water levels, especially when groundwater is high. A drop in water level could increase the risk of the pool floating. If the water level is approaching the top, always pump out no more than 1–2 inches at a time.
Get a Head Start on a Safe Pool Season
As you prepare for spring, taking a few small steps now can help prevent larger issues later. By keeping an eye on water levels, monitoring sump wells, and pumping out excess water gradually, you’re protecting the long-term health of your pool.Thank you for choosing Taunton Pools LeisureScapes.
